FAQ > Kettlebells > What size kettlebell should I buy?

The 1.5 pood (24-kilogram) kettlebell is most often prescribed for swings within CrossFit WODs.  That said, new CrossFitters are often overwhelmed by this kettlebell, while veterans may be insufficiently challenged.

For athletes smaller than 135-140 pounds, a 12-16 kilogram kettlebell is more than adequate to elicit adaption.  For those that are larger and/or stronger, we recommend the 24-kilogram kettlebell.  When this size is no longer challenging, a 2-pood (32-kilogram) kettlebell may necessary.

Keep in mind that these recommendations are based on a two-handed, hard style swing.  If you plan on engaging in other activities, including kettlebell cleans, snatches, presses, turkish get-ups, and arm bars, you may want to invest in a lighter kettlebell in addition to the one you use for swings.
